With the appearance of the shadowy version Grendel, the background turns black and everything fades from view. Everyone is hit with such an intense fear and runs from the battlefield and the skull. After the intense fear has been conquered, everyone goes after the Grendel. As the battle progresses, Camordis arrives with reinforcements, in the form of Meela and Daggeir, as well as, other vikings from our allied village. With the continuation of the battle, members of the party begin to realize that this was all an illusion and start to focus their attacks on the illithid and the skull. While those still stuck in the illusion continue to attack the Grendel and those without attack the illithid and skull, the battle devolves into a free for all. After the illithid has fled and the skull is moved far enough to free those still trapped in it's embrace, everyone is able to focus on the remaining Drow and the Drow priestesses. With the defeat of the Drow air pirates/raiders, the party is able to gather back together to recover and for mutual protection.
It is at this point that we paused the session.
